I painted this piece en plein air during the 2026 Escalante Canyons Art Festival. The subject is a weathered cabin I grew up with, a small piece of Escalante history that now sits in my mom’s backyard. Like most small-town lore, its story depends on who’s telling it.
The cable once used to drag it down from the mountains is still attached, though no one knows for sure where it first stood (Pine Creek?).
As a kid I found it a little scary; now I mostly find it amazing. The weathered cedar planks and steel roof were a joy to paint.
